In order to truly heal SIBO you must heal the gut as well. Some doctors want to tackle healing the gut first, some want to tackle it when the SIBO has begun to subside. Whatever approach you choose it is always necessary to heal the gut to prevent a relapse of symptoms. For that reason, it is recommended by the best SIBO doctors to take a multi-step approach to calming symptoms, treating the SIBO, and healing the gut to prevent further issues and complications. There are many resources available and most of them have the same basic information about healing, so it is best to pick the author you like and the book you are going to read all of the way through!
Healthy Gut Healthy You by Dr. Michael Ruscio
This book is a great intro on healing the gut. Dr. Ruscio will take you through beginner to intermediate knowledge and skill in healing the digestive system. It was written recently and is by a doctor who has been through the SIBO circuit. Dr. Ruscio is also heavy on research and heavy on making that research approachable for laymen so the book is easy to follow and will provide you with take aways to begin healing your gut immediately.
Breaking The Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall
This is the original gut-healing book. It was written in the 80’s, long before SIBO had a name but has great information on the effects of food on the body and digestive system, and how to heal the digestive system with food. This book follows the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and is a must-have resource for following an Intro Diet to calm symptoms. It is very easy to understand and has easy ways of explaining the digestive system to children, with helpful pictures too. This book contains recipes to get you started on the SCD diet but the quantities do not follow the SIBO Specific Food Guide or Bi-Phasic Diet (as those diets are much younger) so be sure to use SIBO specific guidelines to tailor your needs.
GAPS Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride
If you are dealing with psychological symptoms as well as digestive symptoms this book is a very helpful resource for healing. It is the top resource for parents who have children with digestive symptoms as well as behavioral symptoms who want to take a natural, whole-body approach for helping their children heal.
Functional Gastroenterology by Steven Sandberg-Lewis, ND, DHANP
Dr. Sandberg-Lewis is one of the top teaching doctors on SIBO and healing the gut. By that I mean, Dr. Sandberg-Lewis has taught many of the leading SIBO doctors. He knows his stuff and if you ever meet him in person it’s like your tummy getting a healing hug… somehow the body just knows this guy brings healing. So, of course this book is a little more heady. If you are not a researcher personality or haven’t already read up on digestive healing, then this book will likely be a bit overwhelming. However if you have done a lot of reading already and want to get all “doctor-y” or you have a difficult case of SIBO this is a good read.
