Switching to a new diet can be very challenging. But “challenging” seems like a dramatic understatement when it comes to SIBO. Even for those who are skilled in the kitchen and determined to make one of the SIBO diets work well cooking all or most of your food from scratch can be time consuming and difficult. Cooking for SIBO often means learning how to cook with new ingredients that create new textures, consistencies, colors, and tastes. To make the transition a bit easier here are a few resources to help inspire happy healing without any headache.
Cookbooks / Books on Diets Used for SIBO
SIBO-Safe Smoothies by Elena Wistey
This is the book I created to help make the SIBO diets easy and approachable. Smoothies are an awesome way to replace meals, add sweet snacks, and keep delicious, safe foods available and in your hand at all ties. Smoothies are fast and easy to make and are one of the easiest transitions into a SIBO diet.
Sweet Laurel by Laurel Gallucci and Claire Thomas
I love, love, LOVE this book. It has gorgeous pictures and great recipes. All recipes fall under the SCD and GAPS diets. Sweet Laurel includes cakes, frostings, bars, custard and much, much more. If you are looking for a SIBO-friendly, grain-free, dairy free dessert book, then this cookbook is an absolute win! If you are looking for good frosting recipes this book is a must. The only downside to this book is that the recipes are heavy on the almond flour and many use maple syrup, so you may need to limit portions and some substitutions will likely need to be made. However, if you feel like there are no SIBO treats out there that inspire you, you should buy this book. I keep it on hand in my kitchen and visible as a reminder that treats are ALWAYS approachable with SIBO.
Breaking The Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall
This book contains super helpful information on using an intro diet for healing and comes with recipes and suggestions to help. This book was the original SIBO diet guide before SIBO diets were created. The book is foundational, informative, and provides a TON of great explanations for the how’s and why’s diet can heal the body. It comes with a lot of recipes to help get you started towards a happy, healthy gut.
The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet by Sue Shepherd and Peter Gibson
This book is the main text resource for the Low-FODMAP diet. I have a love-hate relationship with this diet and book because the guidelines are often not clear enough to be completely healing for those with SIBO, especially those with a really bad case or difficult case of SIBO. My love for it is that both the diet and book are a good place to start for making small and helpful changes ESPECIALLY if you have a family who will not support a strict SIBO diet. The book and diet are also super helpful if you have a smaller case of SIBO or if you want to be on a more gut-friendly diet long term.
Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes To Eat Well and Feel Great by Danielle Walker
This is Danielle Walker’s first book and so far my favorite of her cookbooks (although I haven’t yet tested out her new Eat What You Love book). Danielle has a blog called Against All Grain and found healing for her autoimmune disease (Ulcerative Colitis) through diet. While her books are advertised as Paleo, her recipes also qualify as SCD and GAPS. There are a lot of people with SIBO who find Danielle’s recipes both inspiring and healing for their SIBO even though her recipes are not SIBO specific.
There are a lot of other resources available for SIBO recipes. After years of SIBO and being in the SIBO community, these are my favorite and most helpful books so far. As I test out new resources I hope to add to this list.
